I began studying Chinese brush painting in the mid-2000’s. (I can no longer retrace the exact year.). It began as an opportunity to connect with my Asian heritage, involve my mother in a social activity as she started classes with me, and find an outlet for my own creative yearnings. I have continued that journey through the present, studying with Chinese brush artists Helen Sze McCarthy, Freda Lee McCann and Peihua (Nicki) Chiang.

I am attracted to the dualities, the yin and yang, in this practice with its attention to the character of each brushstroke—dark or light, bold or fine; to the exaggerated use of negative space; and to the limited, subdued color palette in traditional Chinese brushwork. For more about this ancient art, see my blog “About Chinese brush painting.” A few years ago, I began exploring collage, mixed media through courses at Smithsonian Associates and Montgomery College, with Marcie Wolf-Hubbard, Sharon Robinson, and Wendelin Daniels. In many ways, it is the yang to the yin of the stylized, traditional approach of my brush painting. I love using bold colors, venturing into the abstract, and incorporating a variety of materials, including snippets of my own brush paintings. As a bonus, it’s given me an opportunity to repurpose all kinds of paper products and miscellaneous items.

Shop and Shipping

Please enjoy the artwork in my gallery and shop. Cards and matted and framed pictures are available for purchase. All cards are hand-painted and unique. I usually cut my own mats for paintings, so all sizes listed are approximate. Chinese water color paintings are often long and narrow and don’t fit standard size matting. I have been trying to conform to standard size frames where possible. Shipping costs are by size, depending on whether the item is matted only or framed. Those within the Beltway/local delivery area may request Local Delivery by appointment.

Please contact me if you have questions about the size and shipping charge of a purchase.

I regularly display work in the DC metropolitan area through the Hyattsville Community Arts Alliance, www.hcaaonline.org. Please follow me on Facebook and Instagram for current displays.
